Mechanicsville is a census-designated area (a CDP) with about 36,000 residents. It's a small, quiet community with a good deal of history. Many Civil War battles were fought nearby, and historical sites surround this region of Virginia. Did we forget to mention the lovely weather? If you visit in the colder months and are looking for indoor activities, the many museums nearby Richmond are worth considering. A family-friendly choice is the Children’s Museum of Richmond. If you’re looking for a more adult-like atmosphere, then the Virginia Museum of Fine Art may be a good choice. This area's cultural and historical significance knows no season and will never die.

If Civil War history interests you, you've come to the right place. Many Civil War battles were fought near Mechanicsville, including the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the Seven Days Battle, just to name a few. There are so many historical sites in this area you won't even know where to begin. One such site is Violet Bank It's a well-known museum that charges no entrance fee and originally functioned as a farm, library, private estate, as well as a bank. During the Civil War, it served as the headquarters for General Robert E. Lee. Here, Lee received word of Union activities that would begin the Battle of Crater (which took place in the summer of 1864.) Tour the grounds in the winter, and you may see snow. Visit during the warmer months and take in the beautiful green grass and flowers.
